Running And Driving! The story behind this truck is very interesting. It was purchased in Kananaskis Country, Alberta Canada new in 1977 by a WWII veteran who would only purchase Jeep products after they helped win the war in which he fought. The veteran kept this as his daily driver in the mountain ranges of Alberta for the next 20 years, after which he sold it to a Czechoslovakian mechanic who also lived in Canmore Alberta. The jeep would continue to live in the mountains for the next twelve years, serving as a dependable daily driver until it was sold to a horse rancher as settlement for a debt owed. The rancher used the Honcho as a feed truck for his horses, still in the mountains around Canmore for the next eight years, after which it was parked for the following two years after he purchased a new to him Ford F-350.
I was in Canmore on a day trip with my girlfriend who has an affinity for horses and she convinced me to go riding for the first time. The ride was uncomfortable but fun, and when I was recovering on a bench by the horse pen the rancher came and introduced himself and asked me about a customized pontiac G8 I was driving. We chatted for a few minutes more and he told me about his daughters car having a transmission issue which I offered to take a look at. The rancher said that was kind but his daughter lived in Edmonton 400km away which also happens to be where my shop is (Canadian Wheel and Performance) and we arranged for me to take a look when I got back to the city. He then abruptly stated "ever seen a Honcho?", I replied "only in pictures". It was then he took me to a barn in the back 40 of his property and there it was sitting next to the dilapidated building. He told me the truck was used up until two years previous and proceeded to take me over to the new to him ford and give me a full tour of a very run of the milt XLT truck. At that point I wondered back over to the Honcho and asked if I could pop the hood, he said "hell you can drive it if that tire would hold air". We laughed and then my girlfriend and I went on our way back to edmonton. My shop took care of the rancher's daughters car the day afterward.
A few days later the rancher gave me a call and thanked me for helping his daughter out and said he was interested in selling the Honcho. I drove back to the mountains and picked it up two days later. Upon returning to my shop we degreased and pressure washed the entire exterior and underbody of the truck. We drained and cleaned the fuel tank, changed the transmission pan gasket and filter/oil, installed a new set of plugs and wires, changed the engine oil and filter, put a new output shaft seal in and refilled the transfer case. A carb tune and new battery later the truck was running and driving. It will be a good machine/project for someone.
